The Porter report

Submitted by Randy Porter on November 24, 2007 - 10:20am.

My wife, Gannie, son Brandon, 13, and I returned home to Wahoo, Neb., after visiting my mother, Doris, on Thursday and Friday.

We enjoyed mother's cooking on Thanksgiving. Mom made my favorite side dishes, apple salad and carrot casserole. She made pumpkin pie for Brandon. She also served turkey and dressing with cranberries, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes and raspberry gelatine salad.

I also ate a great deal of her homemade peanut brittle, carmel popcorn and other candy.

I'm sure glad we drove Thursday morning instead of Wednesday night. We saw more than six vehicles in the ditch  along Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 169 that had wrecked due to icy and snow-covered roads.

Lorimor still vibrant, but in different way

The Outdoors is My Passion! The Outdoors is My Passion!

I got a flood of e-mail (one) asking why I had not written a column for months.

Many readers want to know what happened to former Lorimor residents. Others want to read about what happened in the "good ol' days" in Lorimor.

Quite frankly, since I have not lived in Lorimor for so many years, the well has pretty much run dry on those subjects. Yes, there was a time when Lorimor had three bars, every building on Main Street had a store in it and people came downtown every Saturday night just for the excitement. Yes, there were square dance lessons by Frank Adams, there were three full service gas stations, two grocery stores, a bank, movie theater, drug store, variety store, grain elevator, lumber yard, hardware store, other businesses and more churches. The town was self-sufficient.

The boys of summer

With major league baseball in full swing, it reminds me of playing baseball in Lorimor.

There are many names that come to mind from the "Wee-wees," "Pee-Wees," high school junior varsity and varsity baseball. Some of them may surprise you.

Did you know the late Rick Gibson play little league baseball. Yep. Right field. Like me, he wasn't fleet and didn't hit of field that well, but when you grow up in Lorimor, you need every able-bodied boy in town to make a team.
