What are the Responsibilities of a Mayor????????????????

Can anyone tell me what the Mayor position consist of?  There are three areas of responsibilities of City government. They all  have oversight duties. The Mayor, City Council Members, and the City Clerk are put into their positions whether elected or appointed to protect and serve the residents and taxpayors or the City of Lorimor. They are not put into those positions to serve their self interests.

All three areas including the City Attourney are responsable and mandated by State Statute to report any questionable activities to the County Auditor,State Auditor and the different State or Federal Agencies that monitor and inforce Federal, State, County, and local  statutes, codes, laws, and ordances that are legislated  by the government bodies in those jurisdictional areas.

The group that provides the greatest oversight in a City, County, State, or Federal Government is the taxpayors. It is their job to monitor and take action when needed. They have the right and obligation to elect and remove from office any elected official by petition if necessary for  violations, misconduct , or just not following their fuduciary responsibilities. All elected officials take an oath of office to serve and protect and should be held to that oath by the taxpayors.

Now that we have that out of the way, lets get to what the Mayors position consist of. The Mayor is the chief operating officer of the City.

1. The City Clerk and City Workers are under his or her direct supervision. He or she is soley responsible for their actions and conduct.
2. He or she is soley responsible for negoiating contracts and agreements with outside sources and has the responibility to bring the results to the City Council for a vote or discussion.
3. He or she and the City Attourney have the responsibility to do background checks, and reference checks before appointing or hiring people that are under his supervision.
4. He or she has a duty to provide the oversight in the City Government has the right to veto any decission by the City Council if he can sustain the veto.
5. He or she can set the City hours to be open for business and how those hours will staffed.
6. He or she has the responsibility to sign all legal documents agreed on by the City Council, to sign and verify all time sheets and expenditure documents to be certified ( City Minutes, City Agendas, and ect.)
7. He or she is responsible to record and distribute any disiplinary action against anyone under his or her direction and to provide the City Council the information needed by that body.
8. He or she is the dog catcher and is resonsible for enforcing all of the City Ordances.
9. He or she is obligated to go to all meetings that iteract with other goverment entities and report back to the City Council of his findings.

I could go on and on about what a Mayor is responsible for. This is a job that the person that is doing should be properly compensated for.  It is up to the City Council to correct this situation and should be done as soon as possible!
